A Water Level Indicator

I use 2 or 3 plastic drinking straws linked together with a piece of Styrofoam attached to the end. Put this into the fill tube. With the foam end of the indicator resting on the bottom of the earthbox, cut the straw even with the top of the pipe. It makes a great light weight water level indicator. I just look out my window to see which boxes need to be filled.

That's a great idea for early in the season, especially if you have to hand-carry containers of water to fill your box.

If you cut the straw even with top of fill tube, when water level goes down, you can't see the straw.

Oh, cut it when reservoir is empty!   But if box is already running, can't do that.  How about a mark or colored tape around the straw at full level and at "add water" level?

It doesn't matter whether the earthbox has water or not. If it already has water just push the straw down until it hits the bottom and then cut the straw even with the top of the tube. When you let go the straw will pop up from the buoyancy of the foam. The tape thing will work also, just try to keep as much weight off the straws as possible.
I just look out my window and when I cant see the straw I go and water.

I used some old wine corks I had on hand and a piece of wire (light weight shirt hangers), allowed the cork to sit on the bottom of the fill tube in my EB, painted a line at the top of the wire, bored a hole in a cheap plastic cap (any spray paint can top) inserted the wire, filled the EB with water. I am able to see how much water the box needs from the wire protruding from the cap. Not very sophisticated, but it works.

I like the  cork and wire idea...the wind here would make it hard with the straw, but I guess the straw is in the box so it should not matter if it is windy....I will try the cork/wire....

My husband has a couple really long bobbers that may work. I also have plenty of corks and coat hangers that I could try. I do like the water level indicator. It makes it easy to see at a quick glance whether I need to add water or not.

A very small diameter wooden dowel (fitted into a cork) works great also.

I used longish bamboo skewers (normally used for barbecuing) poked into wine bottle corks, and used a black Sharpie to mark low water level on the top end of the skewers. They bob along just fine and the skewer is sharpened on one end to push into the cork. Easy to spot from inside the house (my garden is on two decks).
