Zucchini help
« on: July 18, 2025, 08:10:31 am »
I've been growing produce in my Earth boxes for over 10 years.  This summer I decided to try zucchini for the first time.  I planted 2 plants, in the 2 corners of the box, with the filling tube and fertilizer strip on the opposite side.  This is the same way I planted tomatoes last year.
I installed my staking kit but now I'm not sure if it was needed.  Should a staking kit be used with zucchini?  Should the leaves spill out over the sides of the box in order to mimic how zucchini grows in a standard garden?  Please help.

On another note, only one of my plants is producing fruit and I've only had 3 zucchinis from the 2nd plant so far.  I live in NY and planted the zucchini mid May.  Thank you

You can grow them either way, staked or not.  I've seen several videos recommending having them grow up, rather than sprawling out.  It saves space, keeps them cleaner by having them off the ground, and exposes those blooms to the pollinators rather than having the leaves cover them so they're harder to find.  And some people also cut off bottom leaves as they grow upward.  Pollination also may be the issue if you aren't getting production.
