Warped soil tray - Root Veg Box
« on: September 07, 2022, 11:19:58 pm »
When they were first introduced, I purchased some of the Root/Veg Earthboxes.  I had been using the original Earthboxes for years and was anxious to try this larger version.

After the first growing season, as I emptied the boxes for cleaning and preparation for spring, I noticed that the soil tray was no longer level but warped, in all eight of my boxes.
I made a DIY fix using 3-inch pvc mounted vertically under the soil tray.  That has worked without any problem for about 8 years.  Now I am wanting to buy some new Root Veg boxes
and am wondering if the soil tray support was ever improved or if I will need to install my DIY PVC fix on the any new boxes I buy.  Any input appreciated.

Hi Bob,

If you bought the EarthBox Root & Veg close to its launch, you likely got ones with the 1st generation screen. We recognized this defect and have since corrected it by introducing a 2nd generation screen. The wicking chamber areas have added support to increase stability and longevity, and the bottom of the screen has also been reinforced to prevent warping.

Glad to hear you were able to create a DIY fix for your existing ones. We did offer free screen replacements for those with the 1st gen screens. If you're interested in replacing those, just email customerservice@earthbox.com and we'll send you the 2nd gen screen, free of charge.

Thanks Andrew,

I've sent off an email as you directed.
I will be anxious to try these improved soil screens.
