My tomatoes died
« on: July 19, 2018, 08:23:23 am »
Three weeks ago, my tomato plants were fantastic.  They were tall and had lots of tomatoes on the vines.  However, I went out on one morning and I found one stem that was damaged.  I thought it might have been damaged by wind or rain so I cut it off.  I went out the next day and there were several more stems with the same damage.  I cut these off also.  I was away for two days and when I came back on Wednesday every the plant was dead.  The stems were not cut all the way through.  It looked like someone took a sharp knife and cut into the stem.

I have no idea what caused it.  I have been growing tomatoes for years and I have never seen damage like that.  Does anyone have any idea what caused it and, what I can do to prevent it in the future?  I tried to attach a picture but it wouldn't go through.

Was it just stem damage?  No leaf or tomato damage?  Did you notice any  bugs 🐛 or chewing on the stems?
If the leaves were not effective it seems like animals... deer, gopher, rats.  Etc ...
Just one plant ?
Sorry for all the questions... I’ve had animal damage and that’s what it seems like to me.

These are photos of the plant.  Plan on trying again this year.

Was it windy? Tomatoes that are not trellised will sometime twist in the wind and split longitudinally
Why Google, when you have me?

No.  It wasn't windy and I had them tied to strong support stakes.  But thanks for trying to answer my question.

Looks exactly like what rats did to my tomato plants, until my neighbor got an outside cat 2 years ago. I tried everything, including traps. Got a few, but didn't make a dent. The cat worked!
