Bush Bean spacing question
« on: April 22, 2018, 09:20:10 pm »
Hello everyone, how many bush beans can I plant in a box?  The planting guide says for beans, 16 per box (2 rows of 8) but this seems like a lot for bush beans.  Thoughts?

I do 12 holes  per box, but sometimes I have more than 1 bush per hole because I put 3 seeds per hole since they have a tendency to not come up.

Okay, so two rows of 6? I don't want to overcrowd, but don't want to short myself out of any fresh green beans  ;)

I didn't have a good bean season last year, but I usually have so many beans that I put up about 20 quarts of beans.  I have tried a few type of bush beans and found that the Serengeti beans are the best that I have grown.  Good Luck

I've planted 24 bush beans per box with success. Only issue I had was finding all the beans because there were so many.  :o Kind of like an Easter egg hunt.  ;D I did 4 cutouts of about an inch by 5 inches in the cover. 2 cutouts on each side of the EB. Planted 6 beans in each cutout. I planned on trimming the beans once started but decided to let all of them grow (I can't kill my babies). I think I filled a couple of 5gal buckets with beans.

I had a thread on the old forum. Is that archived somewhere?

Tag, I understand about not wanting to kill your babies.  That's why I usually have so many tomato plants.  Not this year.  Have 3 from the fall planting and 4 from the spring planting.

24? Wow!!! So maybe I just go with the 16 plants after all!
I'm planting 3 Cherry tomato plants, and I love green beans with cherry tomatoes. You steam the beans, and cook the cherry tomatoes halved in butter with basil, garlic, and I think salt and pepper...have to check the recipe....but it's delicious

Tag, I believe there's a waybackmachine capture. So, kinda sorta like an archive?  I'm on mobile right now, postponing getting up and heading to the library. ...perusing online forums while the fluffy doggo cuddles up against my legs is wayyyy nicer than going to the library and getting work done!

Figuring out how to find your old bush bean post will be a fun challenge, and one better attempted at a desktop computer. I'll use that as leverage to help tear myself away from fluffy doggo and comfy  bed.

ETA:  `feints dramatically` Alas, my efforts are for naught.  Perhaps you may have better luck than I did, @Tag? http://web.archive.org/web/20130904173538/http://forum.earthbox.com/index.phpl

Thanks!!!  This was great to read, since I see you used old seeds. I planted several a few days ago that are 2-3 years old.
What I ended up doing:  I have 2 boxes set up with 2 cucumbers on one side, and 5 bush beans on the other side (same as I did a couple years ago).   I also have an empty box that I plan to plant 16 bush beans in a couple weeks from now so my harvest is spread out a bit.

Last night I spotted what I think is the start of a sprout, so I'm anxious to check on them today!
