Mint as a rodent deterrant, early resultsl

Rodents of many types find a nearly unlimited food supply at my place.  One grow house is particularly vulnerable due to its open design.  One morning this spring, I found the pepper plants in about six EBs nearly stripped of their leaves.  By the rare chance, rabbits were to blame, I surrounded the pepper EBs with hard plastic fence material.

Well, the tomatoes started to come in heavy and so did the sharecroppers.

Here is what I tried.  Put mint sprigs in jars filled with water and surrounded most of the Earthboxes.  Everytime I walked through, I brushed up against the mint so it would release lots of scent.  Reasonably confident, I had far less damage, I left some tomatoes fully ripen.  All the ones that had mint nearly touching were not nibbled on, whereas I found nibbled on tomatoes on the ground where there was very little mint.

Mint grows roots in water in a few days and can be potted up.

Well, it might turn out, I'll have to grow at least as much mint as I do tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants.

I also tried electronic and manual traps.  They tend to work only once and I guess the word goes out to stay clear of these contraptions!

I am happy to see this post.  Although I don't see The culprits in action I do have squirrels and others helping themselves.  I was afraid to plant it except in pots but will try this as I get my broccoli in.  Although i was able to get rid of my groundhog problem late last year by trapping 5 large and one small, I think it opened up the buffet for the little guys.
I recently bought some mint and will try this 😊

The only real control of our cute little rodent friends is elimination. In our 3200SF back yard we have three 10,000SF commercial bait stations to control our pests
Why Google, when you have me?

I tried those also and could see that the bait blocks were nibbled on.  So have to assume some rodents died.  After rebaiting, none seemed interested in those green bait cakes.  I also have one hunting cat and stray cats helping plus hawks and visiting eagles.  So there is concern over them eating a freshly poisoned rat.

Last week, I did catch two rats in the manual traps, baited with peanut butter!

There is definitely less damage this year over last with adding lots of mint.  I'll try the poison again this winter, when the cats are in.  Too bad, I can't periodically rent a working rat hound here.  Don't want to add a dog to the menagerie!

The electronic rat traps which run on batteries work great, although not cheap I've been using mine for several years.
