Questions and Answers / Re: Old fertilizer, roots and soil disposal

Are you dumping out your EarthBoxes? There's really no need to do that. The container mix only needs to have some more added and fluffed up with each planting. I have 136 EarthBoxes, some of which are 15 years old, and I have never dumped one out.

We have nowhere to dispose of old soil, roots and fertilizer. Yard waste collection won’t take it. Where do people dump the old stuff?

Questions and Answers / Re: how to handle bugs in general

You're right this is kind of a vague question. That's OK. You're probably seeing the basic stinkbug bug and some of the caterpillar/worm type of pests. UGA Extension would be a great local source of info for you. Here's a listing for the UGA Extension, https://earthbox.com/help-center/cooperative-extension-list#Georgia

For stinkbugs and others of that type I like to use permethrin and for the caterpillar types I like to use spinosad, following the label instructions.

Questions and Answers / how to handle bugs in general
« Last post by GaFreediver on April 26, 2023, 08:00:02 pm »
I live in the North Georgia Mountains. We are very beginners when it comes to EarthBoxes.

Last year, it seemed like we had lots of problems with bugs, but I don't know what kind they were.

Any general tips?

I work from home, so I can check on them every day; I just don't know what to do.

I've read about getting beneficial bugs, and I've read about EarthBox netting, but I'm just not sure what to do.

I imagine my question is too vague, as I can't say what bugs I'm having problems with, because right now we have no issues.

I just want to be proactive and do a better job this year!

Any input appreciated.

I'm thinking you're right, Silver Rose.  Besides, colors are prettier!

@Silver Rose
Hey neighbor, I'm in Texas about an hour and a half southeast from you.  I bought the terra cotta ones, since our brick is peach-colored.  You will love your EarthBox!
Howdy neighbor! I'm orginally from the DFW area but have lived full time on the Okie side of Texoma for a while now. I narrowed it down to terracotta and sage. We sure had a brutally hot summer last year. I figured the black would be a big no for our area.

Dark-colored containers, like black, can absorb more heat from the sun, which can be a concern in hot summer climates like yours. Some gardeners also use reflective materials, like white plastic or aluminum foil, to cover the outside of their containers to help reflect heat away.
I decided to go with the sage. Thanks for advice.

The color of the EB does not absorb significant heat load. The EBs are 90 lbs full and act as a temperature buffer. I garden on the Mississippi Gulf coast and see no adverse temperature issues
