Questions and Answers / Re: snack

forget about polls.

The "snack" is calcium nitrate, 1 tsp every 7 to 10 days right down the reservoir tube.

It's available at real garden centers, not Lowes or Home Depot. Or Amazon.

Questions and Answers / Re: Early Blight?
« on: July 26, 2018, 02:06:47 pm »
The trouble with trying diagnose tomato (or any other vegetable) from pictures on the Internet is matching symptoms. Everyone wants whatever foliage symptoms to be blight. I don't think this is early blight. One of the main signs of early blight are stem lesions with small individual lesions that may coalesce into larger lesions. It is going to show up during early warm periods with lots of rain. Of course early season is relative. For Chicago I would think early June, here on the MS Gulf coast it's April.

Remove the affected leaves and use a contact fungicide like chlorothalanil.

Questions and Answers / Re: filler tubes

I had to replace a filler tube and I believe 1 1/4" PVC was my solution. Golf club tubes are also real close to the size needed

I would bet it's the difference in the environment between TX and SC. It could also be a little over crowding and having three plants competing for the limited resources.  I don't grow melons in any of my EarthBoxes, too easy to pick up at the Farmers Market.

Questions and Answers / Re: Enzymes and/or bacteria?

Why?  Through the years I don't remember anyone using anything like this. The wellness package EB offered a couple years ago may have been close. I trialed one and didn't see any differences or advantages.

Raise the tube a little and shoot a blast of water into the tube should break up any clog. This is a tried and method for me and my 136 EarthBoxes

1 tsp calcium nitrate every 7 to 10 days will provide that needed nutrient boost. This has been affectionately called "The Snack"

Just make sure you add enough dolomite every time you plant tomatoes. The snack is 1 tsp calcium nitrate

I'm betting it won't have the longevity of peat or coir based container mixes. And besides it's ridiculously priced
