Questions and Answers / Re: Broccoli in an EB
« on: January 07, 2019, 09:34:07 am »
We've successfully grown broccoli in our EBs. I just used the Bonnie transplants, 6 per EB. Size wise in the 4 inch range, harvest carefully and the plants will push new heads, these will be smaller, but it extends the harvest. Happy New Year

I water using drip that's attached to my former lawn irrigation system. 1/2" pipe distributes and 1/8" go into each EB using pressure compensated emitters.

I've been successful with onions, both bulbs and transplants, and scallions in my EBs. Try planting just below the mix, too deep could be the reason for failure.

I would use the calcium nitrate snack for everything except the herbs. You should avoid using the hydrated lime, it's better to make sure you're adding the appropriate dolomite during the planting cycle and supplementing with the snack

Aline, use a spinosad a.i. drench for fire ants, 4 TBS/gallon. You have to pull the cover back and thoroughly drench the box

Down the tube, the Bti will disperse in the reservoir

I'd take a squirt bottle and try to flush them off. They should be outside already in a shady spot.

Follow the recommendations from UF Extension for corn grown in-ground, these will not be different for the corn in EBs

An EB is fantastic for growing mint, but it will over run anything else planted with it

Pam, here's a video we shot several years ago looking at modifying the AWS height, www.youtube.com/watch?v=4n4CLA58ZFA

Pam, the lack of after market fittings and valves has been a complaint for years using the non-standard tubing that comes with the AWS.

Theoretically with no plant uptake the the level of the reservoir should not be changing. With the AWS there shouldn't be very much, if any, overflow. Try adjusting the height of the AWS, trying to get the bell end deeper in the reservoir. I'll bet if you shorten the reservoir tube or replace with a shorter tube so you still have the original tube, that would place the bell end deeper in the reservoir and stop the overflow issues you're having.

You're using the snack as it should be used.
