Title: Early Girl tomatoes are turning out mealy.
Post by: Charli on August 09, 2021, 11:33:05 pm
Hello....
This is my first time growing an urban garden in my backyard in the city of San Francisco and using an earth box to grow tomatoes in.
Obviously not even a semi green thumb since the very start of my tomatoes ripening, I have come to find they are mealy inside.  If anyone has any advice, I would greatly appreciate it as well as my husband who is tolerating eating them in salads anyway but not really enjoying it.
Thanks!

Charli, environment can cause this, leaving on the plants can cause this, variety coupled with other factors can cause this. What variety are you growing?

I am growing Early Girl tomatoes on one side of the Earthbox and Big Beef tomatoes on the opposite side.  I do leave them on the vines until they are red in color but when I do pick them, they are still very firm.  The weather here in San Francisco has not been very warm, 68 has been the highest and I am right on the bay.  I do keep my Earthbox tube full of water everyday as well.

I would try picking a couple when they just start showing color. At this point they have all the sugars they're going to have. Place these on a warm windowsill or next to your coffee maker on the counter. Once starting to color tomatoes ripen in response to temperature, not sunlight. Try it an see what happens.
