Title: What to do about mosquitos??
Post by: bugmom92 on July 02, 2018, 04:19:18 pm
Mosquitos. I'm pretty sure they're growing in my water tanks. They are a big problem in my area. Can I put anything in the tanks to prevent them? Thanks!

I've read here on the forum about people putting a little piece of a BT 'dunk' down the filling tube, and using a fine mesh screen to cover the drain hole and filling tube. There's also videos on Youtube with people talking about how they're dealing with them.

Here it's so hot that the boxes need to be refilled twice a day and I think that washes most of the eggs out. I also hang a mosquito trap that attracts them with CO2 from yeast then, sadly, kills them with salt water. (It's from Spartan Mosquito out of Mississippi)

I put a tsp of mosquito dunk bits down the tube every 2-3 weeks..it keeps them down.
I use an AWS with all my boxes —even so they breed in the reservoir..
It’s worth the effort to keep their population down.

I use mosquito bits too.  I also put pantyhose leggings over the watering hole. With the AWS, I put a small hole in the toe and put the tube through. Don’t cover the drainage hole with a mesh; it will clog and drown the plants.
