My house is like a sieve, so I don't have A/C except for a portable room unit I keep for emergency cooling for sleeping. Besides, I can't stand closing all the windows and doors... too claustrophobic for me.
We survive with lots of fans blowing inside while the outside temps are higher than indoors. Once there's a drop outside, then the window fans take over. It helps that we've gotten somewhat acclimated to the heat, otherwise how could I tend all my EBs and enjoy being in the garden?
We suffered through a 4-day power outage... no lights, cooking, fans, water or flushing... On the 3rd day, a friend dropped off a 10" battery operated fan that gave us the first decent night's sleep in days. The point is, we DID survive, in fact we learned a new skill: fanning oneself with those oriental dollar-store fans, while sleeping

Hooray for Yankee ingenuity....
