Ya, I earned it. New to Earthbox

« on: July 12, 2012, 03:52:02 PM »

The more I research Earthbox the more it looks like a soil less medium.  I am wondering if anyone has tried hydroponic nutrients and what medium mix works best in that mode.  I have my Earthboxes on the way and will try one with the recommended mix and fertilizer but want to try the other in a hydroponic mode.

Hi MajicMike,

I haven't tried that yet but the "guru" in my local hydroponic store refers to EB's as a hydroponic system so I suspect they will work just fine.

With my hydroponic system I regularly test for pH and TDS so I can adjust the fill water accordingly - not exactly sure how you'll do that with an enclosed EB.
I'll be interested to see how it works for you.  Let us know.
Thanks
Gloria

If you will be filling your EB from a bulk brine tank you will want to be careful of salt build up. Our vertical garden is basically hydroponic and it's recommended that the brine tank be cleaned once every week to 2 weeks.

That would probably mean you will also have to flush your EB at the same interval.

From what I know from some of the hydroponics experts that talk to us at the shows, most do some type of modification to the Earthbox for easy flow of the nutrients and easy flushing. (requires hole drilling and tubing/piping)
