I've been trying to trellis my cantaloupe plant upward, but it seems a constant battle. It's been latching on the the tomato plant next to it.
I think I've read somewhere that you need to put new ties on everyday because it grows so quickly.

It's 6 weeks old, and I have to yet to see the bud at the base of a flower indicating that a melon is on its way.

I don't use ties on my cantaloupe. I just weave the vines through the trellis as they grow, and the tendrills latch around the wire on thier own. You do have to check the vines everyday and adjust them as needed because they do grow fast and will grab onto anything within reach. I had some cucumbers that were trying to climb into my orange tree! I don't recall how long it took for fruit to bud since I have ton's of bee's and I paid no attention to it. Do you notice bee's at your flowers? Maybe you need to try some hand pollination?

I do not use ties either, seems to be climbing on its own with a little help every now and then with some weaving by myself. When I water I just look for any long vines that are coming out from the box and guide them through the netting

I've noticed a few bumblebees around the cantaloupes, but not the cukes.
It has only been 2 weeks since I planted the seedlings, though.
