Ugh...stupid Earthbox Sale.....just bought two more boxes. A total of 9....hmm....I'll eventually need to get another to make an even 10....... These will be exclusively beets/radish and I think beans, not sure yet...the beets I'm definately sure of....
EarthBox will be the end of my relationship....I'll be single....
But at least I'll have lots of produce!!

That's funny. I just accidentally ordered three more from Ozbo when I was supposed to order one. I have eleven now, and I can't stand that I have an odd number. I have AWS capabilities for 12, but evidently that did not assuage my need to buy more. I don't even know what I'm going to put in these since it's almost impossible to plant this late in N. Florida. Maybe I'll start some more okra.....  BP |

That's funny. I just accidentally ordered three more from Ozbo when I was supposed to order one. I have eleven now, and I can't stand that I have an odd number. I have AWS capabilities for 12, but evidently that did not assuage my need to buy more. I don't even know what I'm going to put in these since it's almost impossible to plant this late in N. Florida. Yep, an odd number is always a good excuse to add one more  . I started off with two and have somehow ended up with 50. Those earthboxes are like rabbits.  |

Our temps are already mid-90's pretty consistently. Has anybody had luck starting lettuce in those temps? BP |

You might want to start a new topic to get the most response on the specific question. I remember some posts stating growing lettuce in the shade and harvesting regularly though the summer will prevent bolting.

An excellent alternative green for warm weather." I got the rainbow chard seed pack containing several different varieties. They are beautiful and yummy. |

Actually, I planted it Spring 2011 in a raised bed and it's still going strong. It's a leafy green, but I personally wouldn't call it lettuce. It's got a much earthier flavor than lettuce in my opinion. Now if I could grow some red sails, black seeded simpson, romaine, oak leaf, and the like, I would truly be happy. It's not lettuce. I responded to the original question about what to grow.
Chard is a member of the beet family. It was cultivated for the leaves and beets for the root. It's sweeter than beets. I don't care for it raw, but many folks like it.
I have enjoyed many recipes with it and even like it steamed alone. The stems are kind of like celery. I cut them out of the leaves and chop them so as to cook them longer than the leaves.
It freezes well too. I steam it about a minute before feezing.
Most of mine are suffering with fungus due to all the rain. I may harvest it all and replant. It grows quickly.

Carole,
Do you direct seed your swiss chard ? Or do you grow transplants and then plant? I direct seed beets but have only planted chard as a transplant...
Any ideas ?

I can't get an earthbox at the moment, as it's too expensive to freight them here in Australia, one box would cost me $130 including the freight. I've made my own SIP's though, and it's so addictive, I keep getting more and more containers!
