Hello everyone!  I stumbled across the Earth Box when doing some research on container gardening this winter, and I am starting off with three boxes this spring.  It seems like this system has some great potential!

I studied botany and horticulture years ago and enjoy gardening, but last summer was my first attempt to grow  edible plants. I had some success with tomatoes in containers and decided to spend this year focused on expanding my tomato growing skills (which really are at a very basic level). I have planted one box and will plant the other two this weekend.  Two tomatoes per box, with the following varieties: 2 Cherokee purples, Mr. Stripey, cherry sweet 100, mortgage lifter, and golden jubilee. I just love tomatoes and am hopeful that these will be tasty and that I can come up with enough ways to use them up Smiley

I am planning to create cages using the pea fence design outlined by Bdank in the forum. What a great idea that is, and so nice that it's all spelled out for people to follow.

I'm in the process of exploring the forum for useful advice... If anyone has found good info about growing tomatoes (especially for newbies) please share!  Thanks.

Hi there!
I'm also from Northern Virginia. I'm glad you liked the pea fence design. Good luck with your garden. I hope you post some photos.

By the way, what tomato varieties do you grow?

I usually do anywhere from 10-15 boxes of tomatoes and I try to grow different varieties every year. A couple varieties that I really like and have brought back every year are:

Brandy Boy
Sungold (cherry)
Cherokee Purple
Mr. Stripey

I have had bad luck with paste/roma type tomatoes in my earthboxes. They always get a lot of blossom rot no matter what I do, so I no longer grow any paste varieties.

This year I'm really excited about some of the new varieties that I'm trying which are:

Black Krim
Neves Azorean Red
Kellogg's Breakfast
Danko
Rampo
Chocolate Cherry
Black From Trulia
Parks Whopper
