My cucumbers do look a little wilted during the day. We have had a couple of weeks of wind which tattered the leaves.

I just picked the first cucke that is 11 1/2 " long.
I couldn't get it all in the picture because my arm isn't long enough.

That's a nice looking cuke. I guess I panic whenever I see wilted leaves, because in my garden it means the vine borers have gotten into my squash.

I hear you.  I decided to try zucchini again this year.  I'm using a trombone zucchini because its stems are more solid, even though the borers got these my first year.  I put diatomaceous earth in my box (supposed to be like knives for soft-bodied creatures)  and put foil around the bottom of the plants.  Keeping my fingers crossed.

The DE needs to be dry to be effective.

Ernie,
Nice looking cuke!!!! I'll be right over with the salt shaker (something you should never go to the garden without) my favorite tool. Grin.

Sue

You might be a little late getting here.  Grin  I had part of it in a salad last night and the rest will be gone in another salad in a few minutes.

I noticed since I picked that one the others are really starting to grow. I have one that's growing in a circle and each end is touching. I'll put a pic up when I pick that one.

Everyone said the Sweet Success were good. That's an understatement. If the Alibi and County Fairs are this good I won't ever try another variety.

Sorry, I'm not.  It can get wet but needs to dry to work.

Bobk--So the DE needs to be dry ?...where exactly do you put it ?  On the cover or close to the stem  Huh?

Seansmum--I am really dense tonight...I thought you were doing something with the salt shaker to get rid of the vine borers and was going to ask you where you put the salt...I reread the post...

Long day,

If I remember correctly, when I was a child (a long time ago), my grandmother used to pour salt on slugs in the garden to kill them. So your not so dense after all Wink.

Ernie: Glad you love the Sweet Success, it is an awesome cuke. The Alibi's are different, not that sweet, but a great producer. They can be picked at any size, but you don't want them to grow, to large. I grab an Alibi and eat it peel and all right off the vine.  The produce 100's of cukes!

Kathy,

My Alibis are just starting up the netting but they have a bunch of little cucumbers started. My County Fairs met with wind disaster and I had to restart them. I can't wait to try those as well.

I do want to make bread and butter pickles so I think I will have plenty of cucumbers to do that.

Here's something I didn't ask before I planted my Sweet Success cucumbers. Exactly how big do the vines get? Right now it looks like they are going to outgrow where I have them.

Well, yesterday afternoon I 'had' to harvest nine cucumbers. The neighbors were starting to 'eye' them.

Yes, I shared.

Another case of cucumber envy!  Right now, I am envious of all of you that are able to harvest anything. Another 27 days till we can plant.
