Speaking of which... my dog was in her pen next to my tote bin benches, and barking up a storm. She was staring under the bench a few feet from where I stood. I looked, and all I could see was a ball of pond netting that had blown under... nothing was there, no chipmunks or cats. I got closer, and there, caught in the mesh was a young garter snake, maybe 18" long.

Well... I picked up the ball, went in the house for my mini pruner and went to work, outside, cutting the mesh, one strand at a time, starting from the tail and working toward the head. Eventually, I got it free, and holding it by the tail, sent it on its way into the brush behind my shed. All's well that ends well...  Cheesy

Now, if that was a black snake, which typically run about 6 ft long, FORGET IT!!!  Shocked

We have to keep our reputation up to keep people from moving here  Smiley but actually, my area is way less buggy than where I grew up in NC.  I am on a barrier island with lots of water around, but mosquitoes are not bad at all--county has a good control program.  Roaches (palmetto bugs--large) could be an issue, but if you keep a spray program up they are not a problem (suburban single family house though...apartment can be a problem).

In NC, there were flies of multiple varieties, gnats, yellow jackets, mosquitoes and just tons of annoying bugs always after you.

Now, we do see snakes 2-3 times a year--I've never had a poisonous one found in the yard--but coral and rattlesnakes are definitely indigenous.  Alligators are in most bodies of water (you just stay away from them).  An increasing problem is the pythons that idiots released in the everglades are now a breeding population and are moving further north each year.

Black snakes are good buddies though.  Save them.

I would never hurt a black snake, but the thought of hanging onto one to free it from netting would definitely cause a conflict between my squeamishness and compassion for all critters.... except stinkbugs, squirrels and mosquitos.  Roll Eyes
