Yes, there are sharp edges sticking out, so if you have children around these cages you might want to cover those or bend them in or something. I was thinking they could be dipped in a plastic coating, like Plasti Dip

Thanks for this suggestion -  it worked great!  My husband and I bought Plastic Dip at Home Depot for under $7, poured some into a short metal cup (we first used a plastic cup but the Plasti Dip ate through it!!), and dipped all the pointy metal ends into it.  It was a bit smelly and messy (use a drop cloth, wear gloves, and be careful because this stuff is corrosive and flammable) but worth the effort.

Thanks for letting me know that this worked. I might try it on my own cages.

Just wanted to say thanks to all for the info in this thread.
First season EB user and everything is coming together now.  I've had the EBs, pea fences, and wire clips for a month or two...just need to get the UV resistant ties and pick up my Pro-Mix on Saturday morning.
Plants arrived from chileplants.com in outstanding growth and health.

Hoping these things do really well.  I've got a directly west facing 2nd floor porch, facing an open field...so we get sun out there from 11am or so, right until it goes down behind the tree line a few hundred yards away.  It was my first summer here last year and didn't quite know the scope of how it was going to go...let's just say I did a LOT of watering, and will never be using clay pots for anything out there again.  That much sun was brutal!

Thanks for all the tips.  I'll come back here if/when I run into problems putting everything together and planting on Saturday!

Thanks!
One question before my big day.

I have 6 EBs...6 tomato plants, 12 pepper plants (everything from scorpion to sweet bell peppers.)
The tomato plants speak for themselves, 2 per box single row.

For the remaining 3 boxes and 12 pepper plants...should I do 4 plant single row or 4 plant double row?
I've been planning on double, so they aren't crowded...just wondering about any other opinions before I pull the trigger tomorrow.

Thanks!

With 4 per box, plant like below.

Re: Wire rope clips
Where did you find a reasonable price for them?
It looks like you needed quite a few..at just over 1 USD
they get expensive.
TIA

I'm too new to post links I guess, but you can find the link in the first post in this thread.
Look under "To make one 60” cage:"

Thanks for the tip on Pambina.
Now all I need to do is find a source for the
"Staking System Rim Clamps" that are less than EB's $2.50 each.
I really hate to spend $25 (almost $33 with shipping) on clips,
So far, I have googled the phrase, and checked at HD & Lowe's with no luck.
We have a "real old fashioned' hardware store in town, so they will be my next stop.
The kind with narrow aisles, poor overhead lighting, and thousands of little boxes of things.
The best thing is the staff seem to know where everything is.  Smiley
Thanks again.

I want to post pictures of my cages but it won't let me!   Huh?
How many forum posts do I need before I can post links?

Hoping maybe I can do it after 5.  I'm thrilled with how everything turned out!
Nope, that didn't do it.  Damn.

Looks great! Did you use zip ties to attach them to the box?

I don't think you are going to find those anywhere except the earthbox store. Maybe you can find a substitution that will work; some other kind of clamps. If you do, I would be interested in knowing what you used.

Hi there,
Quick question for your brilliant trellis system - it appears as though the cages are turned upright.  Is the only reason for using them upright the ability to connect another on top?  I have a small child and have read the plasti dip comments, but my preference is still to have the points down.  Just wondering, and my apologizes if this has already been asked and answered.

Yes, I have the cage flipped so that I can attach it's legs to the other cage's legs making it into one very tall cage; which is needed for indeterminate type tomatoes.
