Hey everyone. I was planting some stuff today, and I found out that you don't need the blow torch to make holes with a metal pipe. Here's how I did it. First, I scavenged around Mr. MDank's garage. I found a piece of pipe which is scrap electrical conduit. We used this stuff to make supports for my EB trellis, so there was a lot of scrap pieces laying around. Then I found a tool (see photo) that looks like a cheese grater (can you tell I know nothing about tools?). I used this tool to rough up the edge of the metal pipe. This gave it a sort of serrated edge (think bread knife).  Then I laid out some coke bottle caps on top my EB. I did this so I could get a visual of where I want my holes to go:  After that, I used my serrated metal pipe to punch my holes. I did this by gently twisting it back and forth over the cover. I actually started off using the blow torch, but then I ran out of propane and needed to come up with something else so I could finish planting. |

Bdank.....way to use the old noggin' (women's ingenuity) and yes, I noticed right away the wood rasp, Tag. What her hubby doesn't know won't hurt him, if I were Bdank, I would just "misplace" that wood rasp, so there would be no complaints, about someone misusing a tool.

A little EMT won't permanently harm that wood rasp. (not a cheap model) It'll just give it a little character and mdank a new story for his buddies. Rd |

Should have used a rat tail file and filed the inside edge of the EMT sharp leaving the outside dia. the same. A better tool. I've made gaskets for cars with the same method. But hey, it works and no one has to know right?  |

$12 holes to replace the rasp!
He can get another one, I'm keeping this one to rough up the edge on my pipe when it gets dull (from the dirt). It's worth $12. I would of paid $12 for something to make punching holes easier. |
