A funny thing happened on the road today.  I was stopped at a red light on a divided highway and got drilled by someone going way too fast and could not stop.  Onstar was interesting, must have been a slow day in town based on the number of emergency responders.  No serious injuries, sore neck and back.  Lots of damage to my rear end, the car of course.

The kicker is the AH had no insurance, no license, and multiple outstanding citations.

How question here is how many folks on the forum are driving without insurance and harming, physically and financially, those of us who play by the rules.

You have my sympathies, doc... glad to hear you're ok.

A few years back, I got nailed driving across a large intersection at the entrance to my workplace parking lot. I had the light, but the far lane was not visible due to truck traffic. I was broadsided by a panel truck, but luckily was unhurt. I steered the car into the driveway, out of traffic and waited to exchange info with the other driver. Long story short-- he was a Mexican farm laborer with no license and had a phony insurance card.

Things got interesting when more and more workers emerged from the back of the truck... 17 in all. They were returning from an all night job at a farm to go to yet another farm, and the driver fell asleep at the wheel, thus running the light. A coworker acted as interpreter, and the local police chief had to call in a bus to take them all away. Me? I had my car towed and my own insurance paid for the repairs. Fortunately, my rates didn't go up. Nothing was done to the other driver... all his info was fake.

Sorry to hear about your frustrating experience today.

I'm glad you're not seriously injured.

I live in Los Angeles and I often ponder the same thing myself.

The way some people *keep* their vehicles makes one wonder...

It's quite annoying, actually. Angry

People who have little or nothing, have the same to lose. It needs to be a more serious crime( term used loosely ). I have six autos, all have liability. I have too much to lose in a law suit.

Seems maybe Congress should take up Auto Insurance Reform so all the disadvantaged drivers in America can obtain auto insurance without paying for it;  afterall, this is another crisis isn't it?  Notice I said Congress without mentioning political parties, there are alot of yahoos on both sides.

I agree with cushman.  Folks who have nothing can not be sued for anything.  We keep insurance on our cars even when they probably should be classified as junkers.  We tend to keep our cars and trucks for long periods of time - 20+ years in some cases.  1976 Olds Cutlass anyone??

I have been hit by uninsured motorist but it was not a car that received huge damage.  Uninsured stolen car ran right through a garage at high speed and our homeowner's insurance had to pay for demolition and reconstruction of the building.  Was not even our fault but our rates went up!

Auto insurance is a joke.  So is the concept of a drivers license.  Until it is too great a risk for the consequences of driving without, we'll always have too many unlicensed and uninsured drivers on the road.

In Oregon, it is the law that every licensed car be covered by insurance and every driver be licensed.  There are ways around the insurance as many crooks know.   We also pay an extra premium for 'uninsured motorist loss' and a good thing we do.

Years ago, while we still lived in town, a drunk in a borrowed uninsured car carreened around our corner and pushed my teenage son's car into hubby's truck that we hadn't even made the first payment on.  Then he kept going.  He turned the next corner and hit the utility pole and the neighborhood went dark.  One of the neighbors ran out in his bare feet and jammie pants and 'encouraged' the driver to stay in the car until the cops arrived.  They took him off to the hospital and told us we couldn't leave our wrecked vehicles on the street even until daylight, called the tow trucks, and sent them off.  If we could have waited until daylight, we could have sent them to my brother the auto mechanic, and my brother the hobbiest body shop.

By the time we paid the towing, storage, more towing, and repairs there wasn't much value left in the son's car.  Hubby's truck fared better and is still on the road and owned by a family member.

Our insurance rates went up.  The drunk got hospital care and finally sentenced to weekends in jail until he decided he didn't want to go anymore and moved out of the county.  We had a lot of challenges teaching our 2 teens the morality behind being a law abiding citizen.

Glad you weren't hurt Doc.  If you ever figure out how to solve this problem, you'll be a hero.

GardenDoc....glad to hear you are ok, but couldn't help but giggle when I read "lot's of damage to my rear end".  Hmm, does that mean sitting is difficult and a long movie is out of the question? Sorry, it just made me laugh. I am amazed at the number of uninsured drivers...Pennsylvania really cracked down on the uninsured a couple of years ago...but it seems like there are all these  loopholes. I have four cars (down from 6) and have every one of them insured, in fact, we are required to keep insurance even on our cars that we park for the winter months.

How about getting hit while being parked.  The other vehicle bumper already damaged run into me, (no damage to my car).  I took pics and sent them to the company.  Days later when the insurance adjuster shows up to this persons house, the vehicle had no bumper and my insurance company paid him 10% of his claim, $98.00.  I told them I was parked, so did the police report and they said because I was behind the wheel in my car and no witnesses, I have to pay AND this would be an accident forgiveness case!  I'm STILL angry about that and I was advised not to change my insurance because the rates would increase.

You can still sue him....He may win the lottery some day...Doubles your chance of winning....

Your question must be rhetorical cuz chances are if I have enough throw away income to pay top dollar for plastic boxes to grow 15 bucks worth of tomatoes while spending 50 bucks to water em then I could afford insurance...AND UNINSURED MOTORIST INSURANCE..

So far, I have paid a premium for my hobby toms but it gives me a gardener's high, gives me something to do [( wrestle with Mother Nature ( Oma Desala )] on a somewhat controlled, ha ha, basis. We gravitate toward a "perceived" advantage in our strategies, not always a ROIC (return on invested capital) endeavour.

Years ago someone came up with the idea of adding 5 cents to the cost of gasoline and have a national insurance fund. Everyone with a car would pay into it. No need to have insurance. Of course, congress is owned by corporations, so that idea never got off the ground.

I got in the same situation in November, but the idiot that hit me was insured. Totaled my paid off car with it's new tires. new brakes, and new hoses. I am still recovering from the whip lash and back injury.  Best of luck to you. Your insurance company should be paying for everything.
