Lake George, NY. Zone 4-5

« on: July 05, 2009, 10:47:29 PM »

Hello, I bought my first EB in May. I'm sooo excited that I already have about 4 dozen tomatoes (all green) but some the size of baseballs. Today I ordered 5 more EBs online. My husband has been warned that we will have a driveway farm. It is so exciting to see the daily changes with such little effort. Instant gratification can be a wonderful thing!!!! We live in the foothills of the Adirondack mountains. It's great place to live but our growing season is short and the EB seems to be the answer. I am really thrilled , to a point that my friends are sick of hearing about my tomatoes. Oh well, they ain't seen nothing yet. Wait until my new boxes get here. Is there anyone else from my area out there?

Hi Sue,

I am in Washington DC in Zone 7.  I have only ripe Early Girl tomatoes and some ripening Black Prince (in a container, not EB).  I have lots and lots of green tomatoes of all sizes with my heirlooms - I can't wait.  Welcome to the Forum!

Not being from your zone I didn't have anything to offer to the discussion, so sent my welcome as a PM instead.

We will never get sick of hearing about your tomatoes. In fact, we'll probably tell
you about ours as well.  Grin

Howdy from Zone 4b in South Dakota!

I used to live on Long Island, and in October 1986, we drove past your way up to Lake Placid for a wedding.

I must say, the scenery was so beautiful we almost drove over a cliff while looking at the fall foliage draped over the Adirondack Mountains. (We decided to take turns driving/looking after that.)  It was absolutely sublime!

Welcome to the wonderful world of EarthBox!  Smiley

We live in the foothills of the Adirondack mountains.

I have a new log cabin and I'm using a lot of Adirondack-style furniture.
If you know of businesses that specialize in that, send me the name/internet link.
I love anything Adirondack! It's not very common here in Mississippi.  Wink

Ceasefire this is the name of someone who has a great reputation for wonderful, original Adirondack furniture but he is really pricey. Ralph Kylloe. If you do an internet search for Adirondack furniture and include locations like Blue Mountain Lake or Indian Lake (where we have a hunting camp) you may find more reasonable artists. The artist I mentioned is in a high tourist area so you know what that means $$$$$. Mac , Yes we live in an amazing area as far as scenery goes and I never tire of it, unfortunately, the trade off is there are no decent paying jobs for our children when they graduate from college so most of them move away, but that is what planes are for. On the upside we have no natural disasters to speak of and I love the lakes, mountains and wildlife.

Are you growing your own seedlings? How big will they be when you plant them in the EB? When will the harvest be?

No, I didn't start my own seedlings for the tomatoes. They were about 6 inches tall when I planted them at the end of May. Now they are almost 4 feet tall with more tomatoes appearing daily. Some of the fruit are the size of baseballs. It's so exciting. I just bought a second EB and have planted it with some green bean seeds. We'll see how they do. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

Sue: Sorry you didn't get a lot of warm and fuzzy responses...I think right now all the EBers are busy eating their produce or making pickles etc. Or they are like you and I and waiting, and waiting for that rare occurrence...TOMATO RIPENINGAlthough not from Lake George, we have very similar climates and frost free dates. I live Northeast of Scranton in the mountains...so we will be EarthBox buddies. I assume you are in that same lack of summer funk that we have been in? Little sun, even more rare are warm days and nights. So we wait, and wait. I too, have baseball size tomatoes.
