Yesterday (Oct 18) was World Food Day in the United States, and it was marked by a celebration at the United Nations in New York City.
For the third year in a row, The Growing Connection was featured at World Food Day. This year, children from New York City, Baltimore, and Rhode Island attended and brought along 25 EarthBoxes full of herbs and vegetables that they had grown in order to demonstrate the possibility for growing technology such as the EarthBox to be used around the world in order to help eradicate worldwide hunger, poverty, and malnutrition.
An exciting event for the children and others in attendance (myself included) was to hear a speech by Kofi Annan (the current, but soon outgoing UN Secretary General). Below is a picture of Mr. Annan sitting right behind a nice Growing Connection EarthBox full of large cabbage heads. The other shot shows some of the EarthBoxes on display at the UN (sorry about the guy with no hair blocking one of them!)
Also speaking at the event were a distinguished list of people, including Ms. Sheikha Haya Rashed Al-Khalifa (President of the 61st Session of the General Assembly), Mr. Ali Hachani (President of the Economic and Social Council), Dr. Judith Rodin (President of the Rockefeller Foundation), and Mr. Jacques Diouf (Director General of the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations).
It was an honor for The Growing Connection and EarthBox to be a part of this event.
