I don't have many ideas on stopping the birds from attacking my tomatoes when they turn red. What do you do to stop the birds?

You can wrap them in pantyhose or Remay cloth, or block them off by chicken wire. I found this on the Internet: No problem Ian, that's what we're here for! Remay cloth is an opaque, finely spun polyester that you can spread over your plants, and it kind of floats on top. It allows water and light in, and keeps heat in, but keeps bugs, birds, etc. out. It can be purchased at any garden centre or nursery, or seed company. Best of luck! Wink kh63

Or you can use bird netting, got mine at Lowes. Buy the deer netting, same mesh, much cheaper per SF. http://forum.earthbox.com/index.php?topic=3385.msg28720#msg28720

gardendoc, I can't tell from the photos, but I take it that you have the ends closed off as well. Is that right? Can you enter either end? kh63

Hubby and I built a chicken coop! LOL But then it's too ugly for residential use. It's behind my business and I sneak out there to play instead of working. Daddy told me this morning that deer are eating the neighbor's garden (cool) LOL

Ceasefire, Ugly, no way. In fact that it would fit right in at Starkvegas The ends of my hoop are draped with the netting to allow easy entry for me, except it grabs that little button on top of my hat all or the time. Every once in a while a bird is able to gain access but get so upset about not getting out that the 'maters are safe. I do have some tomatoes planted outside of the "cage" and these are suffering from our feathered friends.

Speaking of PVC, I am putting up a PVC high tunnel in the backyard, after storm season off course.

Thought you already had PVC tunnel -- what's the difference?

someone recommended hanging cds - they scare them because of the reflection. I'll hang some off my balcony if I get this problem

What I have right now is 1/2" PVC on 8' centers, just enough to hold netting up. This fall I am going to put up a hoop structure I can cover in single ply clear plastic, 1 1/4" to 1 1/2" PVC, 4' centers. This should let me grow tomatoes into December and start producing the cool season crops throughout the winter, if you want to call a season with no snow shoveling winter The CDs only work if they are Micheal Bolton, Zamfir, or Cristy Lane products
