This brand of potting mix I found at my local garden supply and is excellent, near as light and fluffy as what EB sends if you order their kit. It is pre balanced ph-wise. But if you can't get it, Miracle Gro is OK.

From what I've read here, MG formulations vary by regions, and lately, they've been messing around with those formulations. You probably have old mix and new mix. Does it say on the bag what the ingredients are? I would think it's ok since it IS potting mix for flowers and veggies.

Miracle Gro is the worst potting mix going. Schultz is far superior though does have fertilizer charge included. Try Pro-Mix if you can find it. It is soft wonderful and easy to use. Perfect for the EB

We already agree that Miracle Gro Potting Mix is a last resort thing. The problem is that different brands are not available everywhere, and our forum members come from all over the US and even some from other countries. MG is the only thing available in some areas. Pro-Mix is favored by many, myself included, IF you can get it. I've been trying to find a way of compiling a brand list of acceptable mixes, but time gets in the way.

Fafard Professional Growing Mix is another excellent choice if it's in your area. Light and fluffy.

Hmm, i live in California and I bought a bag of potting soil that was dense and heavy and moist, and i just don't think it was what i need to be using with my EBs. That's like taking a new girlfriend out to eat and buying her junk food when she's a cute yoga vegan. Smiley

Hi, Steve!
Info about potting mix/soil was very helpful. Can you - or anyone else - tell me how to get the gummy plastic label residue off from the perforated black bottom piece? I've soaked it in hot water, prodded material through holes with a pen (slow going, believe me!) and am totally frustrated because I can't move on with prepping the EarthBox and getting seeds planted. What should I do?

Fafard Professional Potting mix is available at Rockledge Gardens on US1 in south Rockledge.  I have bought it there for the past couple of years and it works well.  Just bought some today!  Nothing added.  Not sure where you live in central Florida, but I hope this helps.

Oh, I forgot to tell you that Rockledge Gardens also sells a nice organic fertilizer by Plantone as well.

Heat on the labels will make it much easier to remove them  We have done both the hairdryer or the hot car method. You don't want to plant it with the label on...you need to remove it or poke holes through it.
